Male sterilisation (vasectomy) is the surgical interruption of the vas deferens and is now considered the safest method of achieving permanent infertility. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. In our practice we have been performing non-scalpel vasectomy, i.e. sterilisation without a scalpel, for 30 years. In this procedure, a small puncture is made first. Then the skin is stretched with a special clamp until the vas deferens is exposed. The vas deferens are cut and the two ends closed in the conventional way. After the operation is completed, both skin openings are closed with individual sutures.

A vasectomy has no effect on erection, sex drive or sensation in the penis.

The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. This should be followed by a one-day rest period. Physical exertion and sport should be avoided for a period of 8-10 days. The success of the operation, i.e. permanent infertility, is only achieved after two negative ejaculate samples have been taken. The first sample is given after about 8-10 weeks, the second after every four weeks. Only then can the usual anticonceptives (contraceptives) be discontinued.

You are welcome to make an appointment for a consultation and information session to ask details and questions about the operation. We only make appointments by telephone; please state on the telephone that you are thinking about a vasectomy so that you can usually be given an appointment for a consultation within the same week.

The costs of the operation are not covered by statutory health insurance. The costs amount to approx. 420.00€.

The vasectomy can be reversed microsurgically by joining the interrupted spermatic ducts. However, the chances of success for a refertilisation are low. The costs for this complex procedure are not covered by health insurance.
